Junior (Jay) Schweitzer
Junior was born to Ezra and Gertrude (Bender) Schweitzer in Nebraska on May 10, 1923. He passed away at Whispering Pines Assisted Living in Plover, WI on May 23, 2015 at the age of 92. His grandson was by his side.
Junior was born near Milford, NE. The family later moved to a farm near Swanton, NE. In 1944, he joined the Army and served in France during WWII. After retiring from the farm in 1966, Junior and his brother-in-law, Robert Allen, purchased the Chief Motel in Colby, Kansas. They owned and operated motels in Colby, KS, Julesburg and Greeley, CO, prior to retiring in 1977.
In 1950 he married Verda Schwisow. They had 4 children, Janice, Doug, Judy and Jeff. They later divorced. In 1974, He married Lelah Hawks, who preceded him in death in 2005.
In 2008, he moved to Custer, WI to be closer to his son Doug and family.
He is survived by his children, Doug (Connie) Schweitzer, Custer, WI; Judy (Greg) Heiman, McPherson, KS; Jeff Schweitzer, York, NE. Step children: Connie (Harvey) Korbelik, Burlington, CO and Roger Chipps, Greely, CO. Grandchildren: Chad, Nathan, Adrienne, Joshua, Brian, Scott, Jay, Susan, David, Bill, Ashlee and Adam, and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Allen, Tuscon, AZ, and Bonnie Rossmiller, Durango CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Gertrude, his wife Lelah, brother John, two infant brothers, and his daughter Janice.
The family would like to thank Ministry Medical Hospice Care and the staff at Whispering Pines for providing excellent care for Jay in the last year of his life. We appreciate you all more than we can say.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to a Hospice organization close to you.
Memorial services will be held June 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Swanton Cemetery. A reception after at the Legion Hall in Swanton.
