David R. Larson

David Roy Larson, 63, died on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at home after a two-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

David was born on Aug. 2, 1946, in Prescott, Wis., to Kermit and Doris (Fiedler) Larson. He graduated from Ellsworth High School before receiving a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He also served in the Navy. While at Stout, David met the love of his life, Sue Schroeder. They were married on Oct. 25, 1969, in Manitowoc, Wis.

David and Sue began their lives together in Milwaukee, Wis., where David taught industrial arts at Pilgrim Park Junior High School in Brookfield. The couple then settled in Stevens Point, where David was a technology education teacher at P.J. Jacobs Junior High School for 31 years before retiring in 2001.

In 1992, David was diagnosed with leukemia and he underwent a bone marrow transplant in 1993. After beating cancer, he helped and mentored other transplant patients. David’s children and grandchildren were a great joy to him. He also loved “putzing” around the house, working on cars and gardening. He took part in a bowling and softball league for many years and coached his sons in Little League and basketball. He and Sue took many wonderful trips together in their retirement, visiting China, Europe, Australia, Japan, Egypt and a special family trip to Hawaii.

David is survived by his wife, Sue; their children, Sven (Terri) Larson of Savannah, Ga., and Dirk (Julie) Larson of Howard, Wis.; their grandchildren, Gavin, Jackson, Oden, Sawyer and Reagan Larson; two brothers, Harlan (Daun) Larson and Roger Larson; one sister, Mary Ann (Steve) Schoen; two aunts, Irene Fiedler and Violet Peterson; three brother-in-laws, Pete (Mary Lynn) Schroeder, Paul (Mary) Schroeder, Bill (Georgene) Schroeder; one sister-in-law Cory (Ron) Weber and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Kermit and Doris Larson and a grandson, Seymour Larson.

Visitation will be at Shuda Funeral Chapel, 3200 Stanley St., Stevens Point, Wis., from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and noon to time of memorial service at 1 p.m. on Friday at Shuda. The family would like to thank the many family members, friends and neighbors who helped with things large and small during David’s illness. Also, special thanks to the roof volunteers of summer 2009, Thrivent, the Department of Veterans Affairs, St. Michael’s Hospital and Aspirus.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.shudafuneral.com.
